The U-20 South American Championship, also known as the Sudamericano Sub-20, is a biennial football tournament organized by the CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) for national teams consisting of players under the age of 20.
The tournament serves as a qualification tournament for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the top four teams securing a spot in the competition. The first edition of the U-20 South American Championship was held in 1954, and it has since become a prestigious tournament for football in South America.
The tournament consists of ten teams from South America, divided into two groups of five. They play in a round-robin format, with the top three teams from each group advancing to the final stage, where they play in a single round-robin format to determine the champion.
Brazil has won the most titles with 11, followed by Argentina with 6, and Uruguay with 4. The most recent edition was held in 2019, with hosts Chile being crowned champions after defeating Argentina in the final. The next U-20 South American Championship is scheduled to take place in 2021.
